Ontario ponders online gaming

Ontario has been considering the merits of online gaming, especially the benefits of offering government-regulated online poker, for several years. In 2010 the province first announced its intentions, but soon thereafter announced a delay in their initial plan. Now the goal seems to have settled on an undetermined date in the year 2012, at which point residents of Ontario may look forward to enjoying true Canadian online poker.

It’s estimated that Ontarians currently expend roughly $400 million annually on online gambling, with all that money going into the pockets of offshore gaming companies – meaning companies that aren’t headquartered within Canada. It’s uncertain yet whether the Ontario government would seek to partner with existing online gaming companies – such as PokerStars, Party Gaming, or any other popular provider that always has a following in the area – or pursue its own take on online gaming with a completely unique setup.

The government released a statement summarizing its aims in providing government-regulated online gaming, which included emphasizing a gradual launch of opportunities, including the education of potential gamers, extensive responsibility measures to ensure safe, secure, and legal gaming takes place, and that the government is keeping a close eye on technological advances in the field in order to offer the best service possible.
